La Llegada de la Tormenta ©2010 Jaimee Todd

With the onset of the hurricane season (and all the ridiculous names that come along with these storms), I thought it would be appropriate to add a print of La Llegada de la Tormenta to my online store. The painting was inspired by a photograph of a storm that I thought was fascinating and ominous. I decided to use very distinct and precise lines to convey the stern nature of the storm. The style in which I did the clouds was inspired by the paintings I’ve seen of old Chinese screens from hundreds of years ago. I really wanted to emphasize the contrast between the serenity of the evening sky and the tumult of the storm  so that you feel a tension between the two but at the same time see how each element has its own kind of beauty.

As with the other paintings in the Sky Series, I decided to incorporate lettering into the pieces (I told you that I’m a sucker for the written word). As you might’ve noticed, I tend to use a lot of Spanish phrases and titles for my works because, well, I just really like Spanish and after studying and speaking it for so many years, it’s nice to be able to use it (Shout out to my high school teacher, Señora Casali!). But also too, sometimes things just sound better in Spanish because just saying The Arrival of the Storm doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

Anyway, the original painting was sold at Salon Ciel‘s Holiday Art Show, but the print is available for sale at http://shop.jaimeetodd.com. Oh by the way, you can get a 15% discount on anything at my store for the rest of September by using promotional code  URFN2Y on the checkout page.

  1. I love the warm and cool vibes of this piece. The line work of the groovy cloudly imagery displays the influence the 70′s art nouveau era. :-)
